So this years ComicCon has a FANTASTIC story to go with it.... I can only liken it to Frodo leaving the Shire then traveling to Rivendale then onwards to Mordor... It's That Funny.
So We begin bright and hot one Tuesday afternoon, 2 days before con. Kim and I got together to do some last minute trip shopping (food) and finish her costume (that she Didn't Even Wear) and unload her cars trunk (That hasn't happened in 2-3 years considering I found her old boyfriends TV in there) and make sure all our bags are packed with what we need. This first day was really the only calm day in the whole trip. Should have known it was the calm before the storm.....
July 18-21 - A Trip to Mordor
The first thing we did was pack the car! 10Am sharp! That was fun (Cody, Kim, and James are Crap packers. They must not play Tetris) But once that was done and the fighting over.... A New Fight Began! Apparently Cody and James never printed their registration papers to pick up their Con Badges. (Cody swears I should have had them... But REALLY why would I? Once you buy your passes the registration numbers go to your Con Registered E-Mail. I have enough issues checking my own e-mail much less 2 other peoples.) But we were on the way! The trip had officially begun with more fighting! Who was going to drive? Kim was still mostly asleep and Cody had flat stated he wasn't driving At All. And James just didn't want to. Which left me! YAY! I only have a drivers permit and have never driven outside Las Vegas much less on a highway/freeway, whatever. Which I kindly reminded everyone! Because while I would be happy to drive I felt they should understand the full scope of what they were asking. I'm 5 foot so have to re-adjust Everything about the drivers side and windows. And I don't always remember how to work most of the functions. I.E. Windshield wipers, turn signals, headlights, is the gas the left or right pedal..... In the end Cody puffed
up and whined but decided he would drive.
We filled up on gas and headed out of town to the tunes of Kirby Krackl (Apparently no one but me thought of rode music. So the selection was slim. CATS, Country, Some More Musicals, and Kirby Krackle. (Needless to say Cody picked the Geek Music.) We even got as far as Primm Valley before a dark shadow fell over us. About 10-20 minutes outside Prim valley... The car broke down. YAY! We were stuck in the desert! Thats right our car broke down (The boys were such babys. You'd think we tried to kill them). Whining about it being hot. Well of course it was hot! We were in a desert in a heat wave and they wanted to sit in the car with the doors closed! I had to hike up the road in my Star Trek Yeomen Uniform to find the mile marker. That got me Loads of interesting attention. Long story made just a bit short. It was 2 hours before we found a tow truck that would take us back to the Nevada state line so that Another tow truck would pick the car up and tow it back to Las Vegas. Then we spent another 2-3 hours sitting in a McDonalds (still on the state line) waiting for a ride to pick us up and drive us to L.A. That was interesting. You never know what you'll find out about people when your stuck in a car for several hours.
We made it to L.A. and had to wait another hour for the person we were borrowing a car from to come back home. Then we were on the way! (Kim driving now.) SanDiego here we come!
And Just do Everyone knows...Google Maps lies! It took as everywhere but where we wanted to go! Eventually (After a strange looping) we found our hotel (and ditched the boys to Codys dad. Which was awkward because apparently he hadn't called ahead to tell them we where having problems till we were already 4 hours late. So his dad had been sitting outside our hotel the whole time.) It was kinda shading looking. Nicer than I'm used to shady looking. But still Shady. 2 floors of rooms with the room numbers written in Post-Its taped to the doors. But thats what happens when you go cheap. The room was actually very nice. Spacey. Not bad for what we paid for it.
However... it was 2 Am when we got in. We knew the badge line would be ridiculous first day so was determined to get there early! That means we had to be out the door by 6am. We unpacked. Took a quick nap then it was Up!, Shower, and Find the Trolley Station (it was FUN. I'd never ridden a train before)! And we were right to do so! The place was PACKED when we got there! We had to double back 3 times! The badge pick up line was monstrous!
Image for line example to come.
It took us about half an hour TO JUST FIND THE END!!! But once we were in it moved pretty fast. And the place was Crawling with Security and Con Staff. Wasn't no body getting in where they weren't supposed to be. We had a bit of a snag with our Swag Bags. Cause Seriously? the Lego Movie? When we Knew they had such awesome wonders as Classic Batman and Supernatural? I Don't Think So. We loitered around the badge check-in trying to trade bags so long we ran into Cody and James. They dared to tease us! So the nice gloves came off. Obviously underhanded tactics were needed to get the bags we wanted (Kim
Supernatural - Me Batman). Eventually we got a trade up. Kim pulled out the I'm so depressed Puppy Eyes and Sighing Voice. She got a lady straight from the line. Ambush really. But it got her the Supernatural checklist bag. I knew I would have a harder time. Classic Batman was back in style apparently. And Everyone wanted it. I knew I was going to have to trade up more than 1 bag to get it. My target was a family of 4. Husband, Wife, and their 2 kids. Mom and Dad had the same bag. I shamelessly cried. Mom wasn't buying it. But Dad was eating it up. I got that trade. (However from there I had no luck! It was like everyone carrying a Batman bag had vanished! And the ONE i found that was willing to deal wanted $45!!) Me and Kim split up and I went to a bunch of Panels I wanted to see.
Day one was a success! So I had some time to kill later on in the afternoon so went to check out the Dealers room.
This is where my Boss Job Finding Abilities struck gold.
Help Wanted
Thats right I got a Job! First day there and I was employed. Kim was so surprised when I got back to the room that night!
The second day of con was pretty cool as the first. Me and Kim spent more time together. She came to some of the panels I wanted to see. I chased down people she wanted pictures of. That pretty fun actually. Every time I had to chase a Doctor Who character I said: Please Stop Now. I'll Be Forced To Chase You. And Possibly Tackle You If you Don't. And Thats Just Awkward For Everyone. My Friend Wants To Take Your Picture.
The Third day was petty much like the second. The coolest part of the day was the John Barrowman Autograph signing! We were making sure we were first in line. (we weren't. We were technically 2/3.) We met a really nice Loki cosplay and spent the better part of an hour talking to her and her boyfriend? Kim shared her water with her (this will lead to Kim being sick the rest of the trip. The girl told us she had strep throat. Kim forgot and kept drinking the water) We let an old lady cut us in line so then we were 4th. Once we got up to him..... I was a mess. I mean.. John Barrowman! I didn't want to be my usual self... Who Knows what I would say! So I had an inner mantra that I Think I actually said out load. He started giving me this Look.
"Dont Talk. Dont Open Your Mouth. You'll Say Something Stupid. Dont Talk. God Dont say Anything about keeping him and his Adorably New Husband in a cage during the Zombie Apocalypse. Dont Talk Dont Talk Dont Talk!!"
But like I said. He started giving me this Look. So I'm pretty sure I said part of that out loud. Kim told him her story about how last year they bumped into each other and she lost her phone.
I went to a panel then to work. Me and Kim met up later to make Hall H plans...... We could tell the line was going to suck. So we wanted to head back early, pack up the car, and get back in line by midnight.
Yeah right. We got back to our room and packed up easily enough. Even got the car loaded and moved to the trolley station. We missed the Trolley though. That was cool though. We waited for the next one. Spent the better part of the ride talking with the security man.
Then the trolley hit someone. (the Death of Boromir)
And Yes, I have no Soul. Cause I immediately FaceBooked it. (I never use my face book unless its absolutely hysterical.) Kim was appropriately horrified. With the situation and me. After talking to about 6 different police man they told us and the few others on the trolley we could go. What? Go Where? We were Convention goers. We had no idea where we even where. So a lady who was on the Trolley with us gave us a bit of directions and off we went! A proper fellowship. There were only 5 of us though. But one was a Hot Brazilian. MMMM He was sexy with a sexy accent. It probably took us about 40 minutes to get back to the convention center. Hot Brazilian actually worked there apparently. And there was a nice younger girl who was like us. Getting in Line for Hall H. The last gentle man was just going tot he station we would have gotten off at to change lines. By now the line was LONG.
Image for line example to come.
After splitting up we found the end......
God this line was long.
But it was like a Giant Slumber Party! I even saw a cute 4th Doctor sleeping in a lawn chair. And an ADORABLE female Dean and Castiel cuddled together under one blanket. We met some nice people to. The girls in front of use were very nice. Danny and her girlfriend? Who actually wasn't going into Hall H but didn't want Danny by herself all night. It was sweet. (It was crazy though! I don't know what was wrong with me. I had to use the bathroom like 4 times.)
And Let me tell you. All those stories you hear about Hall H? Fucking True. Once your in that line. Your in that line. I had to sneak off to use the nearest hotels bathrooms (The Hilton had a VERY nice bathroom. The Marriot to, though I had to sneak in a delivery entrance there.) And they turned the sprinklers on us. They tell us we cant be on the Sidewalk. We Have to be on the grass. But then they turn the sprinklers on. Twice. It wasn't so bad for me (I can sleep anywhere). But poor Dannys girl. Was standing right over one when they came on the second time. She was drenched. And only wearing a skirt, tights, and a t-shirt. (I hope she didn't get sick)
So there we were in the dark on the harbor wet with only our jeans and thin coats. (Kim didn't want to take the hotels fleece blankets like I did. I even offered to extend our hotel 1 more day to make her feel better about it.) Kim couldn't sleep being that we were outside. But she and Danny seemed to strike up a pretty good friendship. About 6ish? they started condensing the line. What must that have been like? Having to go around waking up all these people sleeping on the side walk? We made it back to the main lawn about 7:30/8ish. We also saw the hot Brazilian from the night before. He was working the line. But the thing that sucked..... was that Misha Collins came out for his morning run... and Went the Other Way!! NNNNNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!
Line security was also freaking doubled!! I had to use the bathroom and had to cry and plead with a security man to let me out of the line And back in! And of course the line had moved and Kim gives crap directions. So I was running back and forth down the lines trying to find her and Danny! And like Indiana Jones Danny popped up to lead me back to their spot. Where we ended up staying for another hour. Me and Danny caught some more sleep. She made a pretty hot pillow.
When we made it to the front of the lines (The single line gets directed into 4 smaller lines at the front) We found that each line gets a security detail that escorts them one by one Into the building. Where there is Another security detail and con staff whose job it is to Congratulate you. LITERALLY! They get paid to stand there and cheer for you getting into Hall H. (The Hall holds 6500 people and once your in. Your In) And then you get Another detail of con staff that escort you to a section of seats. Once you have your seat... DON'T LEAVE IT! If you do theres a Very real chance it wont be there when you come back. (I have some great shirt ideas from all this) So we found seats and settled in. It was just in time for the first panel to start at 10Am.
Supernatural was the first panel of the morning. It was great. (MMMM Misha.....) Danny left after that but me and Kim were in for the long haul. Doctor Who 50th Anniversary panel was at noon. So we took a nap!! Of course this was the time that Kims mom (our ride back to vegas from LA) started calling. Of Course Now is also the time Kim finds objection with me having a job. Her mom wanted us heading back to LA by 2 pm. I had work from 1 to 6... So since I'm a big girl now (I can cross the street by myself and Everything!) I told her to just head out without me. I had my wallet and ID. My bags were already in the car so they could just take it all back to my house till I got back on my own. It wasn't even that hard that or expensive to plan either! Took me like 20 minutes! I could take a train from SanDiego to LA. Then a Grey Hound bus from LA to Vegas. I'd be home the same day as them. They early early in the morning. Me the afternoon. It was a good plan. But Kim rejected it. And then spent the rest of the day complaining I was going to get her in trouble with her mom because I wanted to keep this job I got..... I was a little annoyed. But Oh Well! I went to work and after the Doctor Who Panel and had a blast.
Kim sat in my work booth till it was time to go. We got half way to the trolley station before I realised I left my jacket and had to go back for it. So I had to RUN. All the way across the bridge, down the stairs, across the street, and fight my way back into the center. They almost didn't let me in! But i still had my vendors sticker on so yaya! Then i had to RUN back! I got back just in time to see the trolley I needed to be on pull off. I was sad. But caught the next one. And came to a funny sight once I got off. They guys still couldn't figure out how to pack the trunk. I swear! They kill me with this issue they have. Have they NEVER played Tetris? So I watched from the Trolley platform for a couple minutes before I took pity on them and came and did it myself.
The trip home was anti climatic and yet still funny. James re-appeared in life and I had a pretty funny conversation with him about his cell phone.
"I'm going to be in so much Trouble." he said looking down on his dead phone. "I have to call and check in with my
mom."
"You can use mine." Generously I held my own cell out to him.
"I can't."
Confused I set it back in my lap. "Why not? You just said shes expecting you to check in."
"She wont answer the phone."
"So use Codys. Your mom knows him."
"Not his phone number."
"But you could just leave a message."
"She wont answer."
"She doesn't Have to. Just leave a message that your checking in. I have to do it all the time." Asthma and long
walking require constant location updates in case I pass out.
"She wont answer."
"All she has to do is listen to the message!"
"She wont answer the phone!" He snipped harshly at me.
I gave him a flat stare. "So your saying you can't call her and leave a message saying "Hey, this is James, Your Son.
Checking in. We're on the way home now. My phone died but you can call me back on this number till I get it charged
up"." He had no replay but to frown disapprovingly at me. "I'm just saying. That I doubt she doesn't at least listen to
messages from numbers she doesn't recognise. Cause thats pretty stupid. You wont Always be able to call from Your
Phone. What if someone had to call for you? Or something happened and it was an emergency?"
He ignored me after that......
We made it home bright and early and I went back to sleep!
